‘The new normal’ is a term the media often uses to describe circumstances that were once quite rare or exceptional but have now become commonplace or the ‘new normal’. Examples are financial austerity, obesity, terrorist atrocities or disruptive weather patterns, all of which have now become accepted as the new normal.
What is normal follows a linear trajectory that fits neatly into the next part of an ongoing rational process. ‘The new normal’ is an ingenious term devised by the human mind that cleverly deflects any responsibility for the past by identifying with its latest negative effect in the present. This conveniently avoids confronting the root cause and enables things to proceed in the same negative condition but from a fresh perspective.
