When everything seems a bit of a drag, and the world a dreary reflection, you can be sure there’s no romance in the life. This is because as human beings we are intelligence in matter; and matter when unenlightened becomes inertia. But we’re also something else that is indefinable and impossible to quantify. This unknowable facet of our nature is spirit.
The light of the spirit is recognisable in another whenever it shines through the flesh in an action of purity and innocence. And it’s recognised within the individual whenever resistance to being grateful for the wonder and mystery of life is overcome. Romance is not just the exclusive domain for lovers in a relationship, but an energy that has the potential to revitalise and connect us all to the beauty of life. It’s romantic to pause in the busyness of the day to smell the rose or look at the sky.
The romance of being alive is the uncertainty of living; but only when fear is no longer an impediment to the spontaneity of action. Taking a chance on life or love is a sure-fire way of busting through any emotional barriers. The creatures of the earth all take their chances every moment in the great romance of life and death. We human beings are an intrinsic part of that immortal cycle.
