The Price of Love

February 4, 2025 2 By Lance Kelly

Love is the emanation of the earth’s spiritual being; the unifying principle within matter. Without love’s ubiquitous presence it would be impossible to go on. And yet in most people’s experience, love is fleeting – here one moment and gone the next. Does love possibly require something in return to sustain its divine presence within the man or woman as they participate in the play of life on earth?

The power of love is inexhaustible, and yet is powerless to retain a conscious presence in existence when offset by the vibration of outer forces. Emotional negativity such as mood, anger, fear or resentment contaminates the purity of space between each life sequence. Life then becomes an expression of pain and unhappiness rather than the delight of being alive. Since the majority of people exist as reactive emotional beings, love is regarded as unattainable as an unalterable state.

What commonly happens is that love is objectified and projected upon a particular person or tangible aspiration in the world. When the object of desire is fulfilled, the dynamic tension which instigated the union is weakened, and after a short while the passion that characterised the initial attraction wanes. Love must be beyond desire, and yet everybody desires to love and be loved more than anything else in existence. It’s a deadlock than can only be resolved by the realisation of the price of love.

The price of love’s benediction as an uninterrupted state is responsibility. The world’s notion of being responsible centres on personal love – the love of my mother, children, partner, nation or beliefs. Of all the species, it’s the human animal alone that personalises the love that bonds life forms so intimately through shared experiences and the cyclic process of death and birth. The creatures of the earth are made to be responsible through their very innocence as instinctual expressions of life. Human beings are unique in having the opportunity to not only be responsible but to be conscious of love as the realised state of being.

Can someone really make love conscious in a way that eliminates the downside of human relationships and the normal fluctuations that characterise the negative symptoms of the human condition? And the answer is yes, they can. It’s not a question of learning about love but unlearning just about everything that has been absorbed and conceptualised as the way of love. For example, real love is neither good nor bad, neither right nor wrong. Love has no opposites but is universal in its beauty and fulfilment whenever touched upon in the life. Love is both merciful and merciless in its divine purpose to serve its higher yearning for union with the creative idea of existence.

A man or woman who begins to take responsibility for their person pays the price of love through the containment of their emotional negativity. They willingly endure the pain of being disabused of their former attachments. They then gradually become broader in their spiritual vision and are inwardly acceptant of the changes that are invoked to bring them and whoever is in their presence of love to a deeper state of consciousness. And yet everyone is compelled to pay for love in existence. For the masses, this is paid through the time spent in the world. Time is the price of love as the pain and misery endured of being separate from the source of completion within.

The purpose of life on earth is to make love conscious so as to unify the divisive world. Since this is impossible (because creation would grind to a halt), love is thwarted in its eternal desire. Undeterred, love serves the source of its divine inspiration and never wavers in its task. The man or woman inspired to make the divine connection replicates love in their own life. At times, they too are thwarted by opposition from events and circumstances that appear to sabotage the harmony of living and actually make things harder than before. But such periods of uncertainty disguise life’s master plan for he or she who is the personification of love in the making.
