My Bag’s Full of Things

This poem was inspired by a little girl at the supermarket checkout who announced, “My bags full of things”.

My bag’s full of things
What I’ve said
What I’ve been
Packed with souvenirs
Memories and tears
Of a million years
Lived in sense
From whence
I arise.

My bag’s full of things
Grime and clutter
Stuff from the gutter
Bits that are broken
Like words unspoken
Put away for another day
A fleeting pleasure
This foolish treasure
Of the mind.

My bag’s full of things
What I’ve carried around
A burden so heavy
That drags to the ground
What is this life
Truly about?
To empty my bag
Before it wears out.
